10 New Year’s Resolutions to Improve Your Squash Game for 2023

Some people make resolutions because they want to improve themselves or their lives, while others may not see the point in making resolutions or may not believe that they will be able to stick to them. Still, others may be hesitant to make resolutions because they are afraid of failure or are simply not interested in making a change.

But most of us who play squash continue to play squash because it’s so much fun to make a good shot. But it’s even more satisfying when we can see how our skills are improving over time.

So why not consider making a New Year’s resolutions or two that can help improve your game? Here are a few you could consider.

  1. Improve your fitness level: Squash is a physically demanding sport, so it’s important to maintain a high level of fitness. This could involve incorporating regular cardio and strength training into your routine, or simply making an effort to be more active in general.
  2. Work on your technique: Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player, there’s always room for improvement when it comes to technique. This could involve working on your footwork, grip, or swing, or learning new shots and strategies.
  3. Practice regularly: The best way to get better at squash is to practice regularly. Make a commitment to set aside time for practice each week, and try to find a practice partner or coach to help you improve. Use your club’s round robins to play different players, or set up one of your own.
  4. Learn from your mistakes: Every time you play squash, you’re bound to make mistakes. Rather than getting discouraged, try to learn from these mistakes and figure out how to avoid making them in the future. Keep a journal and make notes after practice and matches.
  5. Set achievable goals: It’s important to have goals in any sport, but it’s also important to be realistic about what you can achieve. Set yourself achievable goals, such as working on a specific shot or winning a certain number of matches, and make a plan for how you’ll achieve them.
  6. Focus on nutrition and hydration: Proper nutrition and hydration are essential for any athlete. Make an effort to eat well-balanced meals, and be sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after your squash sessions.
  7. Work on your mental game: Squash is just as much a mental game as it is a physical one. Make an effort to stay focused and positive during matches, and try to develop strategies for dealing with setbacks and losses.
  8. Experiment with different rackets: Different rackets can have a big impact on your game, but they can also reveal hidden strengths and weaknesses.
  9. Take breaks when you need them: Squash can be physically and mentally demanding, so it’s important to take breaks when you need them. Listen to your body and give yourself time to rest and recover when you’re feeling tired or burnt out.
  10. Have fun: Above all, remember to have fun while playing squash. Change up your practice, play a game with your least dominant hand, different ball or racquet, or play games with with different conditions like the only play length or a shot to one quadrant, or you can only score a point on a specific kind of shot. Whether you’re playing for fun or aiming to be the next world champion, enjoying the game is what will keep you coming back for more.
