Squash Tips: Forehand Back Corner

Balls in the back corners are typically one of the more difficult shots to retrieve for beginner and intermediate players. If you are learning or want to improve your ability to get these shots, check out these great videos with Squash Academy coach, Jesse Engelbrecht.

Before you watch this video it may help to watch getting the ball out of the backhand back corner, first.

Look for these points in this video:

  • Aim: get the shot high and soft to make your opponent wait
  • Keep space between you and the back wall to allow for the swing
  • Horizontal flat swing
  • Hit around and underneath the ball
  • Open the racquet face (tilt it up slightly)
  • Move your hand up the racquet to reduce the length of your racquet
  • Swing goes along the glass (although sometimes you may not have the room)
  • Turn your wrist to make contact

As mentioned in our article on getting the ball out of the backhand back corner, it helps to break it down into smaller steps and then start linking it together.ย

Here is another take from Seb Weenink on getting the balls out of the back corners that emphasises the wrist a little less and uses rotation of the shoulders and hips, discusses movement to the ball and follow-through. He also brings his racquet up more before he swings. This will give you more power over all.
